Students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills by getting involved in a variety of clubs and organizations at the Academy. Officers are elected at the beginning of the year, and each organization meets regularly throughout the school semesters.
Youth and Government »
Youth and Government is a program sponsored by YMCA and the Hatton Sumners Foundation. It provides a wonderful platform for youth to participate in hands-on learning about government processes. Recommended students attend learning sessions on the processes and procedures to research, present, and gain support for topics of political and social importance. Experience is gained by presenting and defending at the district and state level with the opportunity to gain recognition to be recommended for the national level of participation.
Journalism and Yearbook »
Yearbook is a one-year elective course that produces the school annual, which includes a traditional printed book, as well as multimedia. Members of the yearbook staff are expected to have a high level of maturity and the ability to work independently. This is a wonderful opportunity for members of the team to exercise their creativity, while developing new skills in computer design, photography, marketing, budget management, copy writing, and project management. Requirements for this course include people skills and a strong commitment to meeting deadlines.
